Itinerary
Day 1 : From Tours to Villandry
- 22 km
After picking your bikes up in Tours, leave the city and reach the Cher river. Make a first stop at Savonnières pier to discover inland waterway. The youngest might also be interested in the petrified caves a bit farther. Your last ride will lead you to Villandry castle and its vibrant french gardens. Take your time to explore them before checking in your hotel.
Day 2 : From Villandry to Azay-le-Rideau

Follow the cycle path throughout the countryside to Azay-le-Rideau. This small but elegant castle was built on an island in the middle of the Indre river. Feel free to also take a walk through the city where lots of houses are built using tuffeau stones, the same stones as the one used for the castles! At about 3km, you can find a small village totally built in caves, ancient extraction sites of these tuffeau stones!
Day 3 : From Azay-le-Rideau to Chinon
- 32 km
Follow the Indre river until it joins the Loire river near Bréhémont village. On the road, you will come across Islette castle (not included), ancient home of two majors artists: Rodin & Camille Claudel. Then, follow the Loire river, which passes near Rigny-Ussé castle (not included). This castle has inspired the one in Sleeping Beauty. The last part will lead you to a more ancient time with the medieval Royal Fortress of Chinon.
Day 4 : From Chinon to Montsoreau
- 20 km
Start the day by visiting the royal fortress of Chinon and discover medieval France. Then, follow the Vienne river until you reach two villages labelled most beautiful villages of France: Candes-Saint-Martin & Montsoreau. Take your time to explore them and why not take a meal in a cave restaurant?
Day 5 : Entre Chinon et Saumur
- 29 km
Keep cycling and going back in time: visit the royal fortress of Fontevraud where were buried some of the House of Plantagenet during the Hundred Years' War. While cycling to reach your final destination, Saumur, you will pass through an old undergroung village!
